Sports: Wheelchair Basketball
Vancouver-born Janet McLachlan began playing wheelchair basketball after suffering a knee injury playing rugby. When the doctors had informed Janet that playing standup ball again was unlikely, she had discovered wheelchair ball, allowing her to get back on the playing field once again. She competed for Team Canada at the Paralympic Games in 2008. She has since developed into one of the best female wheelchair basketball players in the world, and is a dominant point producer and rebounder. Janet has many great accomplishments, including winning the 2014 World Championships.
When she was growing up, sport was a family affair. Janet’s mother is a National Tennis Champion in the 70 -75 age category and has represented Canada at the Senior World Team Tennis Championships more than once. Her father is also athletic, and was drafted to play football in the CFL.
In her spare time, Janet loves to travel the world and experience and learn from other cultures and people. She hopes to one day travel overland through Southeast Asia and Northern Africa on a motorcycle, completing the Cape Town to Cairo route that she started with her family.
Her favourite quote: “Live all the days of your life.”
