Santiago Stats
The Canadian Sport Centre Manitoba would like to congratulate all of the athletes who recently competed at the 2023 Pan American and Parapan American Games in Santiago, Chile.
473 athletes represented Team Canada at the Pan American Games from October 20 to November 5, 2023. Eight of those athletes are from (or connected to) Manitoba. Team Canada earned 164 medals at the Pan Am Games (46 gold, 55 silver, 63 bronze) and the Manitoba athletes helped bring home 8 of those medals.
135 athletes represented Team Canada at the Parapan American Games from November 17 to 26, 2023. Two of those athletes are from Manitoba. Team Canada earned 52 medals at the Parapan Am Games (9 gold, 15 silver, 28 bronze) and the Manitoba athletes helped bring home 2 of those medals.
SOME HIGHLIGHTS:
- Siblings Skylar, Braven and Tae-Ku Park all represented Canada in Taekwondo, along with their father and coach, Jae Park. They brought home two medals and also gave back to the local Taekwondo community, attending a dojo in Santiago to encourage local children to stay in sports.
- This was the first time the Women’s Eight Rowing event has been included in the Pan Am Games. Abby Dent helped Canada earn the gold in the Women’s Eight, in addition to the silver she had already won in the Women’s Coxless Pair.
- Mitch Hupé set a new Canadian Record for bowling 8 games averaging 244.6 in the Men’s Singles seeding rounds. He won the silver medal in the event the next day, to add to the silver medal he had already won in Men’s Doubles.
- Bethany Johnson is the youngest player on the silver medal winning Senior Women’s Wheelchair Basketball team.
- After the Games, Skylar Park was nominated for a 2023 Panam Sports Award in the Changemaker category.
