About the Program

The Newcomer Sport Internship Program is an initiative by the Canadian Sport Centre Manitoba (CSCM) aimed at providing a pathway for underrepresented individuals who are looking to pursue careers in sport science and administration.

What We Offer

The Newcomer Sport Internship Program offers a one to two year paid internship opportunity specifically for newcomers. Through a blend of hands-on experience, exposure to invaluable networking opportunities, and mentorship, candidates are expected to gain skills and insights into the dynamic field of sport science and administration. Whether you’re starting out in sport science with a keen interest for knowledge or seeking to enrich your professional experience with a new challenge, our program will help you through your pathway to a career in sports.

Position Description

  • Term: One to two years, based on the applicant’s needs, skills, and experiences
  • Position: Intern
  • Stipend: Full-time: $10,000 annually / Half-time: $5,000 annually
  • Type of Position: Internship (full-time or part-time, flexible hours)
  • Location: Hybrid (both in person and virtual work)
  • Application deadline: August 16, 2024 is the deadline for the first round of applications. Future applications may be accepted on a continuous basis, please check back for details.

General Requirements:

  • Newcomers, as defined by the Government of Canada, include recent immigrants, refugees, permanent residents, and those on work or study permits. NSIP is not limited to those in Canada for less than five years.
  • Applicant should be at least 18 years old at the start of the internship.
  • Proficiency in verbal and written communication skills in English language is preferred (TOEFL, IELTS are accepted but not required).
  • Willingness to engage in hands-on tasks.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Open to diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings.

Discipline Specific Requirements

  • Strong interest in sport nutrition.
  • Preferably a bachelor’s degree in nutrition, and one year of relevant experience. Open to nutrition students or high school graduates with completed internships or practicums in related field.
  • Can be a Registered Dietitian or undergoing the process of Registration with the College of Dietitians of Manitoba.
  • Basic proficiency in nutritionist responsibilities, such as meal planning, diet history assessment.
  • Able to interpret and communicate sport nutrition research.
  • Skilled in presentations, resource development, and group education.
  • Strong interest in mental performance and sport psychology.
  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, or kinesiology strongly preferred.
  • Can be registered as a psychologist with The Psychological Association of Manitoba or working towards Registration with interest in mental performance or sport psychology.
  • Basic proficiency in counseling, behavior intervention, and mental health assessment preferred.
  • Able to interpret and communicate sport psychology research.
  • Skilled in conducting presentations, developing resources, and delivering group education sessions.
  • Strong interest in strength & conditioning and physiology.
  • Preferably a bachelor’s degree in exercise science, kinesiology, or related field. Open to exercise science students or high school graduates with a background in sport and fitness.
  • Knowledge of sports research and ability to apply findings in practice.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Experience leading a team or project, demonstrating effective leadership and organizational abilities.
  • Basic understanding of sport marketing principles and strategies.
